Welcome and thank-you for joining us at today’s product launch and press conference; a celebration of our innovation and leading-edge design.
Innovation has always been at the heart of Lenovo and THINK products. I believe that much of the success that Lenovo has achieved over the years can be attributed to the creativity inherent in our products.
But what makes our products important is that they give others the power to be creative. The PC democratized technology, enabling anyone with an idea to have at their disposal the kind of computing power once limited to government agencies and huge companies. It unleashed the creativity of ordinary people.
Thanks to the efforts of the teams first at IBM’s PC division, and now at Lenovo, the innovation brought by PCs has changed the world. Since the announcement of the first IBM PC, more than 1.6 billion personal computers have been sold. Today the PC industry has annual turnover of around 200 billion dollars.
But, after twenty-five years, the PC industry is maturing. The mobile phone industry, on the other hand, is still enjoying robust growth. And, with its “two-pronged” and “3C convergence” strategies, Lenovo is right in the thick of it.
Today, the mobile phone market has overtaken the PC market in size. Because of that, people are wondering if mobile phones will have the same world-changing impact as the PCs. I think we can all agree that the mobile phone has profoundly changed the way people communicate with each other. However, as exciting as that is, there are many indications that this is just the beginning.
3C convergence, cross-industry cooperation, and exciting new developments in media content are driving mobile phones beyond personal communication. Today’s mobile phones are gateways to the rest of the world. They are literally reinventing the ways in which people express themselves. These changes herald the second revolution of mobile communications, and its impact will be even more dramatic than the one before.
In this world of infinite possibilities, our challenge is to make our choices from among the multitude of technologies and trends, and to position ourselves clearly. We cannot be a leader in every field, but nor can we afford the risk of neglecting anything.
From color screen phones, to camera phones, mega-pixel phones, music and multimedia phones, the success of our mobile business is built upon our independent research and development capabilities, and a firm grasp of market trends. These capabilities have enabled us to be at the forefront of the industry, and to launch the right products at the right time. We have learned from experience that innovation is built from the chemistry between our strengths and the market’s evolving trends.
I am pleased to note that our independent innovation has once again put us ahead of the game. Zhijun and his team will share the details with you later in the conference.
We will continue to maintain our core competitiveness in innovation and to embrace this second revolution in mobile communications. Mobile phones are going bring you even more surprises in the future, and Lenovo will live up to its mission and show you once again how a creative idea can change the world. It is indeed a new world, and a new world demands new thinking.
